Daniel Ridgeway Knight

1839-1924

Although born in Philadelphia, Daniel Ridgeway Knight was one of several important American painters who received their artistic training at a Parisian academy. He mastered the French academic style and won several accolades in the French salons for his paintings depicting ennobled peasants, a subject that was hugely popular at the time.

Knight is best known for his paintings of women in picturesque outdoor settings, engaged in either labor or leisure. Although he made his career in the French capital, Knight maintained wealthy clienteles on both sides of the Atlantic.
