Description

The Sacrament

Minerva Teichert, 1951

Against the backdrop of an elaborate Meso-american temple, the resurrected Savior administers the sacrament with the help of his newly chosen leaders. Some elements in this painting are figurative rather than historically accurate. Teichert has six Nephite disciples cluster on the left and six Lamanite disciples on the right. The two groups meet symbolically in front of Christ. Then they go forth united, serving bread and water to the multitude.

The picture is carefully composed. Note the horizontal lines of the architecture played against the diagonal lines of disciples ascending the stairs. These figures form the sides of a triangle that is crowned by the figure of Christ. He is dressed in white and radiant with divine power. A clear area in front of Christ gives the viewer access to him. (Book of Mormon: 3 Nephi 18:2-4, 8-9; see also 3 Nephi 20:3-7)

In her mural, Destruction on the Western Continent, the destruction following Christ’s crucifixion is evidenced through the broken rock fragments, toppled columns, and surging waves. Gathered around the temple, the survivors look heavenward to see the resurrected Christ descending into their midst. In this mural, Teichert depicts the institution of the sacrament among these ancient inhabitants.

This piece is part of our Beholding Salvation and Pageants in Paint exhibitions.

More About Teichert

The works of western American artist, Minerva Teichert, have received increasingly popular and critical acclaim in recent years. Today, the LDS community loves Teichert. She is a woman who successfully combined both faith and family and left an extraordinary legacy of artistic production.

Minerva Kohlhepp was born in North Ogden, but grew up homestead farming in the vicinity of American Falls, Idaho. Her father encouraged her childhood sketching. Soon, she developed an “indomitable will to succeed and excel in the field of art.” She taught school to raise enough money to go to Chicago for her art studies.

She attended the Art Institute of Chicago and Art Students League of New York in the early 1900s. There, mural paintings and theatrical pageants were dynamic components of American popular culture. Teichert embraced these art forms. Following the admonition of her art teacher – the American realist painter Robert Henri – she used the visual language these murals provided to tell the narrative of her religious heritage as well as that of the American West.
