Description

The Three Wise Men

Minerva Teichert, 1937

January 6th is the traditional Christian celebration of Epiphany, commonly known as Three Kings’ Day in the United States. For Western Christians, this holiday celebrates the visit of the Magi to the Christ child.

“… Behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east and are come to worship him.” (Matthew 2: 1-2)

Minerva Teichert is beloved among the LDS community as a woman who successfully combined faith and family and left an extraordinary legacy of artistic production. Here, Teichert depicts three wise men traveling on camels and holding gifts that they will present to the young Christ child. Through careful selection of clothing and composition, she acknowledges the mystery surrounding the wise men while also honoring their dignity and spiritual perceptiveness.

This piece is part of the Beholding Salvation and Pageants in Paint exhibitions.

What’s Going On?

The canvas is dominated by three male figures mounted on camels. The camels are traveling from left to right, facing the right edge of the canvas. All three figures wear loose robes and have individual headdresses.  The man on the left holds a gold box in both of his hands. The foreground under the camels’ feet is sand with outcropping of grasses.  The middle ground, behind the camels, is sand dunes.  The background is night sky with small stars.  Even though it is night a light source comes from off the right side with shadows falling behind the camels.

More About Teichert

The works of western American artist, Minerva Teichert, have received increasingly popular and critical acclaim in recent years. Today, the LDS community loves Teichert. She is a woman who successfully combined both faith and family and left an extraordinary legacy of artistic production.

Minerva Kohlhepp was born in North Ogden, but grew up homestead farming in the vicinity of American Falls, Idaho. Her father encouraged her childhood sketching. Soon, she developed an “indomitable will to succeed and excel in the field of art.” She taught school to raise enough money to go to Chicago for her art studies.

She attended the Art Institute of Chicago and Art Students League of New York in the early 1900s. There, mural paintings and theatrical pageants were dynamic components of American popular culture. Teichert embraced these art forms. Following the admonition of her art teacher – the American realist painter Robert Henri – she used the visual language these murals provided to tell the narrative of her religious heritage as well as that of the American West.
